Remembering the Jews of Coburg

Descendants of the Coburg Jewish Community

We are the children and grandchildren of the Jews of Coburg, Germany, all of whom were either murdered or forced to flee from 1930s and 1940s Nazi Germany.

We were not supposed to exist, but we do. We live all over the world, including USA, Canada, and Israel, today.

Thanks to the diligent work of several amazing Coburg residents of today, the City of Coburg has created a memorial so that everyone, everywhere, will remember our ancestors. This work is especially important because Coburg was the first location where Hitler's rise to power was facilitated by regular people in a small town. The first large street brawl instigated by Hitler's band of paramilitary brownshirts, happened in Coburg in 1922. The first Nazi-controlled City Council in Germany was elected in Coburg in 1929.  Hitler memorialized the importance of this small town by creating the Coburg medal in1932; it was subsequently awarded to over 400 Nazi leaders.

But Coburg was and is the home of many wonderful, decent people. The question of how such a murderous movement can take root, grow, and explode, is beyond our collective understanding. We just know we must never forget, and never allow it to happen again.
